Resume Writing Tips
A resume is a selling tool outlining your skills and experience so an employer can see, at a glance, how you can contribute to the employer's workplace.
Below are some tips that will help you get the most out of your resume. We have also provided you with three sample resumes: Resume Sample One, Resume Sample Two and Resume Sample Three, as well as a Resume Template that you can use to build your own.
KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL RESUME:
- Your current job should be in present tense and previous jobs should be in past tense
- Do not use the word "I"; in a resume... "I" is understood.
- Use bullets not paragraphs for your job responsibilities; it's easier to read.
- Run "spell check" several times!!
- Have someone else proof-read your work.
- Represent yourself accurately with all information (work, history, job duties and education)...if you falsify information you will be caught!
- Check your personal information for accuracy... a prospective employer can't reach you if your phone number is incorrect!
- Be brief, not verbose... the interview is the place to expand on your accomplishments... not the resume or the cover letter.
- If you're a new graduate, your resume should be 1 page. If you are a non-traditional student and returned to school after being in the market place then it's acceptable if your resume is longer than 1 page. If you already have an extensive work history, it's okay for your resume to be 2 pages. Even 3 is acceptable if done properly. Beyond 3 pages is way too much!
- It's okay to list the phrase "References Available Upon Request" but it would be redundant. You won't be hired without providing references and you may need to use this space for something else.
- Your references can be listed on a separate page called "Resume Addendum".
- If you have technical skills, list them in a "TECHNICAL SUMMARY". This makes it very easy for the reader to determine if you have the skills he or she is looking for.
- Remember! The easier your resume is to read, the better an impression you make!
